Where are you going anyway?
My cross-country roatrip begins this June- here is a list of my planned stops.
Missouri
my first stop, CARTHAGE to catch a drive in movie off old Rt.66
Oklahoma
TONKAWA to try and find my way thru a cornfield maze, and STROUD for lunch at the Rock Cafe on Rt.66.
Texas
DALLAS/FT. WORTH, DUBLIN to tour the Dr. Pepper Plant, AUSTIN to check out the music scene, camping on the PADRE NATIONAL SEASHORE, stroll down the riverwalk in SAN ANTONIO, and a stop at the Cadillac Ranch near AMARILLO.
New Mexico
Cruise the Turquoise Trail between SANTA FE and ALBUQUERQUE, 'get away from it all' in WHITEWATER CANYON, WHITE SANDS, and CARSLBAD CAVERNS NATIONAL PARKS(N.P.), hope for an alien abduction in ROSWELL, and go for a swim in HOT SPRINGS, assuming they drop me back off.
Colorado
Drive the Million Dollar Highway from DURANGO to MONTROSE, see some old friends(i miss you Reed) in COLORADO SPRINGS, relive my previous life as a Beatnik in DENVER(i'll be thinkin of ya Amy Bell), and remind myself why i will live and die in the mountains in BOULDER, ESTES PARK, GRAND LAKE, and ROCKY MOUNTAIN N.P.
Utah
the obvious..... Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce, and Zion N.P.
Nevada
GREAT BASIN N.P., try not to get shot at AREA 51, see what all the fuss is about in LAS VEGAS, and in general try not to run out of gas.
Arizonia
GRAND CANYON to see if i can get someone to hang me over the edge by my ankles(i love you grandpa), stand on a corner in WINSLOW, chill out in ROCK SLIDE STATE PARK, fall down at the London Bridge in LAKE HAVASAU, and enjoy a night or two in a real bed at Aunt Teresa's near PHOENIX.
California
stand in the middle of the world in FELICITY, JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL FOREST, make the first stop on my Tour of Resting Places in CATHEDRAL CITY to visit Frank Sinatra's gravesite, sleep in a Wigwam in SAN BERNADINO, LOS ANGELES ( although i'm not sure really why......smog and traffic jams i guess) worship James Dean near CHOLAME (where his short life ended in a fatal car accident in 1955), watch the rock climbers conquer El Capitan at YOSEMITE, look for ghosts in the Winchester House of Mystery in SAN JOSE, jog across the golden gate bridge in SAN FRANCISO, tour the Jelly Belly Factory in FAIRFIELD, get drunk in the NAPA VALLEY, and see for myself in REDWOOD NATIONAL FOREST.
Oregon
Defy gravity in GOLD HILL at the Oregon Vortex, hike in CRATER LAKE N.P, and have a Guinness for old time sake at Paddy's in downtown PORTLAND.
Washington
Be blown away at MT. ST. HELENS and MT. RAINIER, have a cup of joe at Java Jive in TACOMA, hike thru the rain forest in OLYMPIC NATIONAL FOREST, whale watch on the SAN JUAN ISLANDS, and spread the love in Peace Park near the Canadian border in BLAINE.
Montana
Drive thru Big Sky Country in search of a real cowboy on my way to Wyoming.
Wyoming
Set my watch to Old Faithful in YELLOWSTONE, and have a close encounter at DEVIL'S TOWER.
South Dakota
Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore, and the Badlands.
Nebraska
Visit Carhenge in ALLIANCE(a stonehenge replica made out of old cars stuck in the ground...... well i probably won't ever make it to see the real one).
South Dakota (yes, again)
Stop for some American kitsch at the corn palace in MITCHELL.
Minnesota
Window shop in BLOOMINGTON at the Mall Of America.
Michigan
See the ship's bell from the Edmund Fitzgerald in WHITEFISH POINT, then ferry over to sit in a rocking chair on the world's longest porch on MACKINAC ISLAND.
Wisconsin
Stand on Lambeau Field in GREEN BAY, and tour the House on the Rock in SPRING GREEN.
Iowa
Swing a bat or two on the Field of Dreams in DYERSVILLE.
Illinois
Visit Michelle in CHICAGO, hopefully catch a Cubbies game.
Indiana
More nature in the CRATERS OF THE MOON N.P. in ARCO, and Tour stop #2 at the birthplace and gravesite of James Dean in FAIRMOUNT.
Ohio
Browse the shelves of the Book Loft then fill up on a BBC sandwich at Rax in COLOMBUS, take in some history at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in CANTON, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in CLEVELAND.
Pennsylvania
get in touch with my inner knucklehead at the Harley Davidson Assembly Plant in YORK,and get grossed out at the Mutter Museum in PHILADELPHIA.
New York
get "high" in BETHEL, former site of the Woodstock Festival, barrell down NIAGRA FALLS(thanks to tiffany for the great tip ;)......more to come later.
Vermont
Enjoy a free sample at Ben & Jerry's in WATERBURG, and take the scenic route up ROUTE 100.
Maine
No planned stops, just driving thru, over to the coast for a fresh lobster dinner.
Massachusettes
Have a tea party in BOSTON, and go sailing off CAPE COD.
Connecticut
Have a slice of pizza in MYSTIC.
New York(for the 2nd time)
Ferry over to LONG ISLAND, and hit the tourist traps in NYC, as well as Ground Zero.
New Jersey
Hit Piccolo's, Leo's, and LePore's in HOBOKEN, birthplace of Frank Sinatra.
Washington DC
the obvious.......Smithsonian, Vietnam Wall, Arlington Cemetary, Walter Reed Medical Museum.
Virginia
WINCHESTER, the home and gravesite of Patsy Cline, and Tour stop #3.
North Carolina
Take the scenic route on the BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY to SMOKY MOUNTAIN N.P.
Kentucky
Catch a moonbow at Cumberland Falls State Park in CORBIN.
Tennessee
Walk down Music Row and catch the next Garth Brooks at the Bluebird Cafe in NASHVILLE.
Georgia
Visit Jeff in ATLANTA.
South Carolina
Hike, beachcamp, and relax in HUNTING ISLAND STATE PARK.
Georgia(again)
Walk thru historic SAVANNAH on my way south.
Florida
Visit Brian in JACKSONVILLE, and drink from the fountain of youth in ST. AUGUSTINE.
Alabama
Complete my Tour of Resting Places in MONTGOMERY, home and gravesite of Hank Williams.
Louisianna
Have dinner at the Acme Oyster House and walk down Bourbon Street in NEW ORLEANS, camp and relax in GRAND ISLE STATE PARK.
Indiana(for the 2nd time)
Drive North up the Great River Road and over to the once utopian community (and my last stop) of NEW HARMONY.
